About Blaine Young
Blaine Young is Frederick County’s self proclaimed “Youngest Good Ol’ Boy”… and for good reason.
Blaine’s father, Ron, served as Mayor of Frederick for four terms. So, the Young family’s longstanding high-profile presence in the community had Blaine surrounded by the “movers and shakers” (the opinion leaders) of the region from a very early age.
Born and raised in Frederick, Blaine graduated from Governor Thomas Johnson High School and then attended Frederick Community College. He was a starter on the basketball team for both schools.
In 1993 Blaine earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Frostburg State University with a major in mass communication and a minor in history. Upon graduation he became a middle school technical education teacher, dabbling in radio part time as an intern at G103 in Cumberland. (The station’s programming was, interestingly, a blend of news/talk with country music).
At age 23 Blaine followed in his fathers footsteps and entered the world of local politics as Chairman of the Democratic Party for Frederick County from 1995 to 1999. Then, at age 26, Blaine was elected as the second youngest Alderman in Frederick City history in 1998, serving until 2002. Despite being voted “Favorite Politician” three years in a row by the readers of Frederick Magazine, Blaine decided to retire from political office at the age of 30.
Upon leaving public office, Blaine announced in 2002 that he was switching political party affiliation from Democratic to Republican. Despite this switch, Blaine (deciding that blood is thicker than any other loyalty) actively supported his father’s 2005 Frederick mayoral campaign to unseat Jennifer Dougherty. Ron defeated Ms. Dougherty in the Democratic primary before losing the general election in a tightly contested race against Jeff Holtzinger.
Married with four children, Blaine has been hosting both Frederick’s Forum each Saturday and the WFMD Sound Off each weekday since 2001. The platform created by this role has led to some controversy and two of the highest profile political feuds in recent Frederick Country history: Blaine Young versus Mayor Jennifer Dougherty and Blaine Young versus County Commissioner John “Lennie” Thompson.
In addition to “stirring the pot” in the community, some of Blaine’s favorite pastimes include nursing a glass of Crown Royal, chomping on a cigar, following the local/regional sports scene, and actively seeking ways to serve the community.
